Coach Morten Olsen of the Danish national football team - one of the longest-serving football specialists in the world leading the country's eleven - has extended his contract with the national football association for another two years.

He has been coaching the national team since the year 2000.

The financial contract terms are not disclosed.

"The contract has been extended from mid-2014 to the summer of 2016 - the European Football Championship in France," the statement from the Danish Football Association said.

The team led by M. Olsen failed to secure a spot in the final stage of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, even though the Danes finished second in Group B of the European zone qualifiers with 16 points. They did not advance to the playoffs as their result was the worst among the nine European qualifying groups.

The country's football association searched for and consulted with specialists in Denmark and abroad, but they were unable to select a new coach for the national team.

"I am proud of the football association's trust in me. This influenced my decision to remain as the national team coach," Olsen is quoted as saying. This contract extension in this role is his fifth.

64-year-old M. Olsen is the first Dane to represent the national team in at least 100 matches both as a player and as a coach.
