In the second leg of the Italian Cup final in Milan, "Inter" once again defeated the "Roma" club and won their first trophy since 1998, when they won the UEFA Cup. In Italy, "Inter" last won a prize only 15 years ago.
1 - 0 (First leg 2-0, aggregate score 3-0) 52' [1 - 0] Sinisa Mihajlovic
In the first match at home, the "Roma" club had lost by two goals, so even though this time Milan's team was without Brazilian Adriano and Argentine players J. Zanetti and E. Cambiasso, who were participating in the Confederations Cup, the capital city team needed a miracle to win.
"Inter" started the match more actively, and the visitors managed to defend O. Martins' attacks only twice, with just over half an hour played, a Nigerian fell in the "Roma" penalty area, but the referee did not dare to award a penalty. Soon P. Mexes fouled J. Cruz, but S. Mihajlovic's penalty kick went wide.
In the second half, "Roma" coach B. Conti strengthened the attack and brought in V. Montella, who had the first real chance to score when F. Totti passed the ball to him, but the goalkeeper F. Toldo was the first to reach it.
However, "Inter" broke forward - in the 52nd minute, a penalty was awarded and from about 25 meters, S. Mihajlovic's shot bounced off the goalkeeper's hands and into the goal. The hosts took the lead, and Roma's club hopes were finally shattered in the 66th minute when L. Cufre received his second yellow card.
In the remaining part of the match, there were no more dangerous moments, and "Inter" celebrated the victory and won a very rare prize, which the team's coach R. Mancini had already won six times as a player and three times as a coach. Meanwhile, "Roma" despite the defeat secured a ticket to the next season's UEFA Cup tournament.
