"Barcelona" defender Cesc Fabregas was outraged by the attempts of some Madrid publications to tarnish the injury of his teammate Lionel Messi, who is currently recovering.
The patience of Catalonia ran out after the Madrid newspaper "El Mundo" claimed that the footballer's father, Jorge Messi, not only is accused of tax evasion, but also laundered money obtained from drug trafficking during a friendly match organized by his son.
Although the publication was not supported by any evidence, the circle around L. Messi reacted swiftly and immediately denied the journalists' allegations. The player was backed by representatives of the Spanish Ministry of Interior and Civil Guard.
Unsurprisingly, the defamatory information published by "El Mundo" made it to the newspaper's cover, but Messi's statement "remained unnoticed".
C. Fabregas is convinced that there are still many people who seek to discredit and belittle the leader of "Barcelona" in any way possible and tarnish his reputation.
"Something is going on here. There are people who can speak loudly without any evidence whatsoever. Apparently, after six great years, someone got bored, someone does not like that the team is winning many matches, someone needs to find another best player. However, Lionel doesn't need to prove anything additional, he is the best," said Fabregas to "La Sexta" journalists.
According to the defender, some other Madrid newspapers are acting strangely as well: "As soon as L. Messi suffers an injury, it suddenly seems like he hasn't achieved anything at all, and the slightest negative information immediately appears in big headlines".
"I used to play against Lionel, now I play with him in the same team. His status as the best player in the world cannot be questioned. It's a huge question whether there will ever be a player in the world like him," Fabregas did not hide his frustration with the rumors.
