"As we announced, the defender suffered an injury during Tuesday's training session. After the test results were revealed, it was determined that the player will no longer be able to play this season. There is hope, however, that he will recover by the European Championship in June.
"Gareth's right knee is injured," the team representative said. "He will now wear a knee brace and will not be able to play for about five weeks. Nevertheless, we do not believe he will play this season."
"This would have been my fifth tournament with the national team. It would have been special. It would mean as much to me as my first appearance with the team, but as you get older, you appreciate similar things more," the player said. "If I were in the team it would be fantastic, and if I could still play it would be even better."
England's national team coach S.G. Eriksson will announce the team lineup in mid-May, and the championship will start on June 12th."
