Maradona: Don't blame L. Messi if Argentina doesn't win the World Cup © EuroFootball.com

Argentinian football legend Diego Armando Maradona insists that the national team's achievements in the World Cup will depend not only on its leader Lionel Messi.

Having triumphed in the 1986 World Cup, D. Maradona believes it would be unfair to blame the "Barcelona" forward for the team's failures in Brazil.

"If Argentina does not win the World Cup, Messi should not be blamed for it. However, I believe he will perform excellently in the summer," said the 53-year-old Argentine.

The last time Argentina, the strongest national team on the planet, won the tournament was in 1986, when they defeated West Germany 3-2 and Maradona was the captain of the "Albiceleste."
