The best Lithuanian A league football player Nerijus Valskis will continue his career in Romania.
Former Marijampolė "Sūduva" striker signed a 3.5-year contract with the Craiova "Universitatea" club on Wednesday.
"We had offers from clubs in Poland, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, but the Romanians offered such good conditions that it was simply impossible to refuse," - said the football player's agent Paulius Paknys to lrytas.lt.
Last season, N.Valskis became the top scorer in the Lithuanian championship. In the 2013 A league championship, the 26-year-old striker scored 27 goals and was then named the best player in the A league.
A few weeks ago, N.Valskis negotiated with another Romanian club, Dinamo Bucharest. The Lithuanian successfully passed the medical exam in Bucharest, but ultimately did not agree on the financial terms of the contract.
"The Craiova club offered conditions twice as good as 'Dinamo'," - P.Paknys did not hide. - But it is no less important that the "Universitatea" coach really wanted to see Nerijus in the team."
The Craiova club has been the champion of Romania four times (1974, 1980, 1981,1991) and won the country's cup six times, while in 1983 they played in the UEFA Cup semifinals.
At its best, "Universitatea" was the only team able to challenge the Bucharest clubs.
But after a conflict with the leaders of the Romanian federation in 2011, the Craiova club was removed from the country's championship and after long legal disputes ended up in the first league.
The leaders of the legendary Romanian club do not hide their ambitions to revive the lost glory of the team. Now "Universitatea" is the leader of the first league and hopes to return to the highest league this summer.
The team is the only one in Romania to fly to matches by plane, and the club's leaders have already started building a new 35,000-seat stadium.
"They not only have the funds, but also a strong vision for their team for the next four years. They are preparing not only to return to the highest league, but also to participate in European tournaments again," - said P.Paknys.
This winter, the Craiova club has already signed a contract not only with N.Valskis, but also with a physical trainer who worked at Amsterdam's "Ajax" club.
"I have no doubt that this will be a good place for Nerijus to continue his career," - said P.Paknys confidently.
