After a particularly unsuccessful season, one of the strongest teams in Spain seems to have decided to make serious changes and is currently one of the most active participants in the player market.
The Spanish champion of 2003/2004 and owner of the UEFA Cup today announced that they have signed contracts with the Spanish national team striker David Villa, and former defender Mario Regueiro.
Villa moved to Valencia for a fee of 12 million euros and signed a 6-year contract with the club. The 23-year-old Villa managed to score 32 goals in the last two seasons at the club and established himself in the Spanish national team.
Regueiro's move to Valencia did not cost anything, as the player's contract with his former team had already expired. The 26-year-old defender scored 8 goals in the last season of "La Liga", so he should be able to properly replace Valencia's main defender Vicente in the upcoming season if he is plagued by injuries again.
"Regueiro is a very good defender," said Valencia president Juan Bautista Soleras. "Villa, on the other hand, is one of the best strikers in Spain, so by acquiring these players, we are taking a solid step towards our main goal - the title of champions of 'La Liga'."
It was previously announced that the Spanish club was also reinforced by Dutch player Patrick Kluivert, Brazilian Edu, and former goalkeeper Juan Luis Mora.
There are also rumors circulating that Valencia has made an offer to Portuguese free agent Luis Figo, and intends to acquire Bayern Munich defender Willy Sagnol and Dutch representative Jan Kromkamp.
