Donetsk's "Shakhtar" football club announced on Saturday morning that 25-year-old footballer Maicon tragically died in a car accident.
The club's statement read: "We regret to inform you that footballer Maicon Pereira de Oliveira died in a tragic accident on February 8, 2014. The incident occurred in Donetsk."
The Brazilian joined the club in 2008, but was constantly loaned out. In six matches wearing the shirt of the Ukrainian champions, the Brazilian scored one goal.
"Maicon was a talented young footballer. He loved life and knew how to enjoy it. His untimely death at only 25 years old is completely absurd. Our condolences go out to his family," the club's statement read.
