The unsuccessful first stage of the Intertoto Cup match unfolded for Vilnius "Vėtra", who lost at home to the Romanian club "Ecomax" with a score of 1-4. Even though the result did not reflect the battle on the field, it meant that the capital team did not follow the example of "Žalgiris" and withdrew from the tournament.
Vilnius 1 - 4 Cluj "Ecomax" (First leg 2-3, aggregate score 3-7) 3' [0 - 1] Cosmin Tilinica 29' [0 - 2] Adrian Anca 34' [1 - 2] Gediminas Butrimavičius 85' [1 - 3] Vasile Jula (pen.) 90+2' [1 - 4] Cosmin Tilinica
In the third minute, despite the efforts of the "Vėtra" stadium announcer to inspire the spectators to support their team, the fans were silenced - C.Tilinica broke into the penalty area, fooled the defender, and sent the ball into the corner of R.Merkelis' goal.
Although the "Vėtra" team attempted to attack, they defended unreliably and allowed the opponents to attack dangerously.
The closest to a goal for the Vilnius team came in the first half - after a great pass, E.Blažys broke away from the goalkeeper, but his attempt to chip the goalkeeper was slightly imprecise and the ball bounced off the post.
Despite the setback, the "Vėtra" team did not give up and in the 33rd minute regained hope of equalizing. After a penalty attempt by the Romanians, the ball was cleared, but G.Butrimavičius, first to reach it from about 12 meters, shot accurately and reduced the deficit.
The "Vėtra" team suffered a crushing defeat at home and had to withdraw from the tournament. Representing Lithuania in the Intertoto Cup, Vilnius "Žalgiris" will continue the battles, facing the team from Daugavpils, Latvia, in the second stage.
