US Senators Address FIFA: Russia Must be Isolated from International Soccer © EuroFootball.com

US senators Mark Kirk and Dan Coates have appealed to the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) with a proposal to isolate Russia from international football. The Americans suggest not allowing Russians to compete in the 2014 World Cup and canceling the right to host the 2018 championships.

The senators aim for FIFA to suspend the membership of the Russian Football Federation in the FIFA organization. "This possibility must be considered at a special FIFA meeting due to the current Russian occupation of independent Ukrainian territory," announced Mark Kirk and Dan Coates in a press release.

The senators quote FIFA statutes, which state that a country's participation in the organization must be suspended or revoked if it discriminates against certain groups of people.

FIFA had to take similar sanctions against Yugoslavia. The country's national football team was banned from participating in the 1992 European Championship and the 1994 World Cup.
