The steering wheel of the Dutch national team for the next two years will be taken over by 67-year-old Guus Hiddink, who coached the team from 1994 to 1998. His assistants in the national team will be Danny Blind and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Last year, G. Hiddink coached the wealthy Anzhi Makhachkala club, having previously worked as the coach of the South Korean (2001-2002), Australian (2005-2006), Russian (2006-2010), and Turkish (2010-2011) national teams.
G. Hiddink will coach the Dutch team until the 2016 European Football Championship, after which the assistant coach currently Danny Blind will take over. G. Hiddink himself is then expected to become the technical director of the national team.
The official presentation of the new coach and his team is expected to take place next week.
In the upcoming World Cup, the Dutch national team will play in Group B against the champion Spain, Chile, and Australia.
As a coach, G. Hiddink has participated in three World Cups: with the Dutch national team in 1998 and the South Korean national team in 2002, he finished in fourth place, and in 2006 he led the Australian team to the next stage.
With PSV Eindhoven, G. Hiddink won the Dutch Eredivisie six times, the national cup four times, and the European Cup in 1988. With Real Madrid in 1988, he won the UEFA Cup, and with Chelsea in 2009, he won the FA Cup.
