Joel, Avi, and Bryan Glazers were forced to leave Old Trafford stadium on Wednesday with a police escort as fans protested against the club takeover and posed a threat to the Glazers' safety.
This was the first visit of the Glazer brothers to the club since their father fully took over. Chants of "die, Glazers, die" echoed around the stadium as about 300 fans expressed their dissatisfaction with the new owner.
Over a hundred well-organized police officers were needed to safely remove the Glazers from the stadium. Fans set up barriers trying to stop the Glazers from leaving. Two fans were also detained.
Some fans threw various objects at the police. In order to control the enraged fans, the police used rubber batons and trained dogs.
Colin Hendry from the Manchester Independent Supporters' Association stated that the police's actions were too harsh. "Roadblocks were set up, and people were simply standing and chatting," Hendry told BBC radio. - "When the Glazers started leaving the stadium, people sat in front of the barricades. However, the police, armed against rioters, with rubber batons, without any warning, without any order to disperse, simply attacked those people."
However, a police officer said: "The police were called to the stadium because we received reports that a significant number of fans were protesting outside. Many officers were sent to ensure that the protest ended peacefully."
With this protest, fans wanted to once again remind that they are not accepting the scandalous club takeover and are not going to sit idly by.
