Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola joked at a press conference before the UEFA Champions League quarter-final match against Manchester United that Sir Alex Ferguson offered him to take over as coach, but the Catalan did not understand the Scottish English accent.
Deciding to take a break from football, and not coaching any club in the 2012-2013 season, the 43-year-old P. Guardiola was considered one of the main contenders to replace A. Ferguson when he announced his retirement at the end of the season.
The Catalan told journalists that he had dinner with the former Manchester United coach, but it was difficult for him to understand the Scottish English accent.
"He invited me to dinner at a restaurant. My English is not very good, so I didn't understand everything, and he speaks so fast. Maybe I didn't understand - did I receive an offer or not?" Guardiola said.
The Catalan decided to coach Bayern Munich and the club has already secured the German Bundesliga title, improving several national records. On Tuesday evening, the Bavarian club led by him will face the Manchester United team at their home ground, Old Trafford.
Although Manchester United has not performed as expected by their fans this season, Guardiola said that the new coach David Moyes simply needs more time.
"No one knows the recipe for eternal success. You can't win titles if you don't have top-level players next to you - I was lucky to always have them throughout my coaching career.
If the Manchester United leaders decided to hire D. Moyes, it means he can win. Sometimes you just need more time. Manchester United's decisions are usually right. They know that Moyes is a good coach, and he did a great job at Everton," Guardiola said.
