Alexei Smertin will play for Charlton next season. The 30-year-old Russian has been loaned to the local team for one season.
"I would like to thank Jose Mourinho for allowing us to loan A. Smertin," said Charlton manager Alan Curbishley. "Alexei is a very flexible player, able to play in multiple positions, which gives us more opportunities."
Chelsea acquired A. Smertin from the club for £3.75 million. Last season, the Russian played a total of 30 matches for the London team.
In 1999, the defender was named the best Russian footballer of the year. A. Smertin also represented his country in the recent World and European championships.
