Vilnius "Žalgiris" continues their successful performance in the UEFA Intertoto Cup. S. Širmelis' players played the first round of the third stage on Saturday evening in Greece against Atromitos Athens, who finished in 6th place in the Greek championship.
Atromitos Athens 1 - 3 Vilnius 16' [0 - 1] Virmantas Lemežis 60' [0 - 2] Igoris Morinas 67' [0 - 3] Branislav Jašurek 85' [1 - 3] Prokopios Saganas
"Žalgiris" lineup: Leus; Paknys, Graziunas, Stonkus, Sorokinas (73' Tereskinas); Maksimovic, Silo (61' Kauspadas), Jasaitis, Jašurek (79' Dovksa); Lemežis, Morinas.
Despite missing several key players, including goalkeeper Mindaugas Malinauskas, the "Žalgiris" footballers surprised by defeating their opponents 3-1 in Greece, even though they were not playing at their own stadium due to non-compliance with UEFA standards.
The team from Vilnius took the lead in the 16th minute with Virmantas Lemežis scoring the first goal, and maintained their advantage until the end of the first half. After an hour of play, Igoris Morinas increased the lead, and seven minutes later Branislav Jašurek scored the third goal, leading "Žalgiris" in Greece with a three-goal advantage.
As the match neared the end, Atromitos managed to score a consolation goal, but it did not give them much hope for the away leg in Vilnius, where they will need to win by a three-goal margin in the return match on July 23.
