UEFA announced on Friday that it has received five bids to host the 2012 European Championship.

The joint bids of Poland-Ukraine and Croatia-Hungary, as well as proposals from Turkey, Italy, and Greece are in the running for this opportunity.

Bids from Azerbaijan, which wanted to co-host the tournament with Turkey, as well as projects from Romania and Russia, submitted in February at the preliminary stage, were rejected.

Among the candidate bids, only Italy has previously hosted the European Championship. They did so in 1968 and 1980.

The 16-team tournament is the third largest sports event, after the World Cup and the Olympic Games.

The last European Championship took place in Portugal last year, and the next one will be held in 2008 in Austria and Switzerland.
