The Nigerian national team will now be coached by Frenchman Philippe Troussier. The 50-year-old strategist was officially appointed by the Nigerian Football Federation over the weekend.

The announcement did not disclose any financial details or the duration of the contract. This is not the first time P. Troussier takes the reins of the Nigerian national team. In 1997, he helped the African team qualify for the World Cup in France, but was still dismissed.

Last season, the coach worked with a team, but due to poor results, he lost his job. The Frenchman has previously coached teams from Ivory Coast, South Africa, Burkina Faso, and Japan.

The main task for the new coach will be to qualify for the 2006 World Cup. Currently, Nigeria, with 15 points, is tied for the leadership position in Group 4 with Angola, which also has the same number of points. There are two matches left until the end of the qualifying tournament.
