The French champion started the new season impressively by defeating the country's cup winner in the super cup competition. The winning team scored three goals, all from the debutant Norwegian John Carew.
In the summer, J. Carew moved from "Besiktas" to "Lyon" and in the second minute he earned a penalty kick, which was converted by the young Hatem Ben Arfa, leading his team forward.
Although Lionel Mathis soon equalized the score, Carew restored Lyon's lead after half an hour and added two more goals in the second half - Gerardo Houllier's players defeated their opponents 4-1 despite missing five key players.
These teams competed for the super cup in 2003 as well, with Lyon celebrating victory. The four-time French champions will start defending their title this coming Sunday, while the Ligue 1 championship begins on Friday.
