London Legionnaire from Sweden Freddie Ljungberg will not change teams for the next four years. The 28-year-old midfielder has agreed to sign a new four-year contract, which will be valid until the summer of 2009.
The current contract of the small-in-stature Swede was valid until mid-2006. There were rumors that F. Ljungberg could follow the example of Patrick Vieira and change clubs. According to the media, his services were especially of interest to the renewing Real Madrid.
"I spent almost seven years at Arsenal and now I am happy to have signed a new contract," said the footballer who is constantly invited to the Swedish national team. "I am looking forward to the new season and hope that playing in our new stadium we will win many trophies."
F. Ljungberg has played a total of 265 matches in the Arsenal lineup, scoring 68 goals. The player arrived in London in the summer of 1998 for £3 million from his hometown team "Halmstads."
Meanwhile, another Arsenal legionnaire Robert Pires stated that negotiations for a new contract have been postponed and will be resumed immediately after the new year. The contract of the French midfielder also expires next summer.
