Liverpool reached an agreement with Everton regarding the acquisition of the English national team defender Phil Neville, the Merseyside club announced on Thursday.

Although the transfer details are not yet revealed, they should come to light this evening when P. Neville undergoes a medical examination. It is believed that Manchester United will pay around 5 million euros for the player.

The 28-year-old full-back, who can play both as a defender and a midfielder, spent his entire 10-year playing career at Manchester United, where he joined from the youth team along with his brother Gary. In 2004, P. Neville signed a five-year contract with the "Red Devils".

However, the English national team defender, who has represented his country 52 times, failed to secure a permanent place in the starting lineup last season. With less than a year left before the World Cup in Germany, the defender chose the opportunity to play more and be called up to the English national team.

This high-profile acquisition of the "Toffees" (Everton's nickname), together with the opportunity to play in the UEFA Champions League, could be a strong argument for players whom Liverpool intends to acquire. Among the possible candidates is also the forward of the other city team "Liverpool", the most prolific player in the 2004 European Championship, Czech Milan Baroš.
