On Monday, all speculations and rumors about Rio Ferdinand's future were put to an end, as the England national team defender finally extended his contract with the "Man Utd" club after long negotiations – the player signed a new four-year contract and will remain in the team until 2009.
For a long time, Ferdinand could not reach an agreement with the club regarding a new contract and even faced displeasure from fans. However, "Man Utd" finally managed to present the defender with an acceptable offer and on Monday Ferdinand signed a new contract, under which he should earn about 100 thousand pounds a week.
"I am delighted to have signed a new contract. I have always wanted to stay here. I am happy because we have finally sorted everything out, now I can focus all my attention on the upcoming season," the defender said.
The news that one of the team's main defenders extended his contract also pleased the team's coach Alex Ferguson. According to the strategist, now the club can continue to plan for the future.
Ferdinand arrived at the "Red Devils" club from the "Leeds" team in 2002 and became the world's most expensive defender. "Man Utd" paid 30 million pounds sterling for the player.
