The newcomer from Brazil, Edu, will miss the majority of the new season as he suffered a left thigh muscle injury during a friendly training match on Saturday.
The club's medical staff stated that the 27-year-old defender will need surgery and he will most likely be out for six months.
Edu arrived at Valencia in July after his contract with London's Arsenal expired.
The 27-year-old Brazilian played for Corinthians from 1998 to 2000, and wore Arsenal's shirt from 2000 until this summer.
The 2005-2006 Spanish championship season will begin next weekend, on August 27.
