In the starting lineup of Inter, Luis Figo was missing due to poor physical form, and he watched the match from the stands, as well as Walter Samuel, David Pizarro, and Santiago Solari, who began the match on the bench. Juventus coach Fabio Capello left team captain Alessandro Del Piero on the bench and also Christian Abbiati, recently transferred from Milan.

The match at the rain-soaked field started very aggressively by Juventus. Turin's newcomer Patrick Vieira had a great opportunity to score, but his shot missed just above the goal. Inter also responded with several attacks, but the home team's defenders Fabio Cannavaro and Jonathan Zebina managed to defend successfully.

At the end of the first half, Turin's striker David Trezeguet sent the ball into the goal, but the referee called a very questionable offside and did not count the goal, so the teams went to the break with a scoreless draw.

In the second half, both teams' forwards Adriano and Z.Ibrahimovic exchanged several dangerous shots on goal, P. Vieira's header hit the crossbar, but none of these players managed to score. At the end of the second half, A. Del Piero appeared in Juventus ranks and immediately had a great opportunity to score, but he shot inaccurately from a few meters away.

After the end of regular time without goals, the match went into extra time, and finally, in the first half of extra time, a goal was scored: during a counterattack, Adriano passed the ball back to an unmarked Veron, and he sent the ball into the goal from the edge of the penalty area with a precise shot - the result became 1-0 in favor of Inter.

Later, Del Piero's shot was cleared from the line by Adriano, and shortly after, the latter himself failed to take advantage of the opportunity to double the lead. The Milan team managed to withstand the pressure from Juventus and win their second Italian Super Cup in their history. The first time they managed to win it was in 1989, under the leadership of Giovanni Trapattoni.
