Spanish national team forward Fernando Torres released a statement thanking his club, Madrid, for not negotiating with Newcastle about his transfer.
A few days ago, Madrid rejected a £26 million bid from Newcastle for the talented striker. It is said that this offer was made as a backup plan in case Newcastle failed to attract England international striker Michael Owen from Real Madrid.
Their offer came at the last minute, when the championship had already started, Torres said in the statement. The club didn't even consider this offer.
"I know how important that money would have been for the club and how it could have helped," the forward continued. "I want to thank the club for trying to keep me. The truth is, I am very happy that Atletico didn't even start negotiations."
The 21-year-old forward has been a key player for Atletico since he arrived at the Madrid club in 2001. Currently, the Spaniard is in the national team camp preparing for upcoming friendly matches against the Canadian national team.
