Last night in the English Premier League the remaining five matches of the eighth round were played. After these matches, the leader position was further solidified by the London club "Chelsea", who collected 24 points in eight matches, leading their closest pursuers by 9 points.
Yesterday, the English champions faced the strongest team of the last season in Europe, "Liverpool", for the second time in less than a week at "Anfield" stadium. Unlike in the Champions League, the London team secured a convincing victory on Sunday with a score of 4-1.
Goals for the visitors were scored by Frank Lampard, Damien Duff, Joe Cole, and Geremi, while Steven Gerrard stood out for "Liverpool". The title of the most valuable player of the match, perhaps, should go to "Chelsea" striker from the Ivory Coast, Didier Drogba, who, although did not score a goal, significantly contributed to the team's success.
In another match, "Arsenal" won at home with a minimal result against "Birmingham". After seven matches, Arsène Wenger's team climbed to sixth place with 13 points, having played one less game than many of its competitors.
Meanwhile, the season continues tragically for last year's successful competitors, Liverpool's "Everton" club. After seven matches, David Moyes' players have only managed to earn three points and are still unable to rise from the last position on the "Premier" league standings. Yesterday, "Everton" lost 2-0 to "Man City" away.
On the other hand, "Aston Villa" lost at home 3-2 to the rising team in the tenth place, "Middlesbrough", while the successful league debutants, "Wigan", somewhat unexpectedly, won 2-1 against "Bolton" in fifth place.
