The club today (Friday) celebrates its hundredth anniversary. Various events in Seville will take place throughout the weekend, with the culmination of the celebrations being Sunday's "La Liga" match against Bilbao Athletic.
Sevilla was founded on October 14, 1905, becoming the third club in the southern Spanish city after Balompie and Real Betis clubs. The latter later merged into Sevilla's eternal rival, Real Betis Balompie. Sevilla played in the Andalusian regional championship for almost thirty years and made its debut in the Spanish championship in 1934, finishing a respectable fifth place.
Since then, they have been Spanish champions once (in the 1945/46 season) and won the Spanish King's Cup (Copa del Rey) three times (in 1935, 1939, and 1948). The hundredth anniversary of Juande Ramos' team coincides with their participation in the UEFA Cup for the second consecutive year.
The anniversary celebration began today with various events. On Saturday there will be a bullfight, and on Sunday there will be racing competitions, which will end just before the Spanish championship match against Athletic Bilbao.
