Former Bayern Munich head coach Ottmar Hitzfeld says that he was offered a job at the club, but did not mention whether that job would mean he would take on the role of head coach of the team.

O.Hitzfeld, who triumphed in the Champions League with Munich's Bayern and Dortmund's Borussia, admitted that he would love to return to football after an 18-month break, as he has not trained any team since his departure from Bayern in 2004.

"Manchester United made an interesting offer," he told the newspaper Die Zeit. "I want to dive back into football, and next summer would be a perfect time. My wife would come with me to Manchester, and I am ready for new challenges."

The 56-year-old coach hinted that his wife Beatrix agreed to move to Manchester, and this approval allowed him to start negotiations with the club: "It is extremely important. In the past, I received plenty of offers, one from Milan, but I couldn't imagine working in that country."

"In January, I will turn 57 and I certainly have no intention of retiring from football. I am ready to take on a new job. Coaching is my calling. After all, I have spent my whole life on the football field," said the famous coach.

The German, who also mentioned that he is currently learning Italian, emphasized the importance of being able to speak English: "It is very important to speak the language of the country where you work as a coach fluently, otherwise many people will not take you seriously."

O.Hitzfeld won four Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich and twice lifted the German Cup, recently rejecting an offer from Edinburgh's Hearts.
