Over the weekend, the 2005 Russian "Premier" league season ended with the matches of the 30th round. Since the country's champion, which became Moscow's "CSKA", was determined in the previous round, the last day of the championship was focused on the capital's clubs "Lokomotiv" and "Spartak" derby, where the second place winner was revealed. Before the last round, "Spartak" and "Lokomotiv" had the same number of points, but Spartak surpassed their opponents in terms of victories, so a draw was enough for them in this head-to-head battle. Nevertheless, coached by A. Starkov, "Spartak" had the initiative throughout the match and in the 63rd minute they rightfully took the lead with a goal from the team captain J. Titov. However, with four minutes left until the end of the match, a long-range shot by M. Asatiani changed trajectory after hitting a defender and ended up in the goal. With the score level, "Lokomotiv" rekindled hopes, but the "railroaders" failed to snatch victory and had to settle for third place, while "Spartak" with I. Dedur took second place and secured a ticket to the Champions League for the next year. All other matches did not have greater significance. Winning gold medals, "CSKA" finished the championship with a productive victory against "Alania", "Dinamo" won against "Krylja Sovetov" away and shared eighth place, "Moskva" maintained fourth place after a victory against "Saturn", "Zenit" despite winning against "Rostov" remained fifth, "Rubin" lost against "Shinnik" and still finished in fourth place, while "Tom" defeated absolute underdog "Terek", and "Torpedo" beat "Amkar".
