Coach Rafael Benitez told his team that before they leave for the Club World Cup in December, he would like to secure a spot in the top four of the English Premier League.
The Champions League winners are currently in seventh place, just three points behind fourth-placed Wigan. Both teams will meet on Saturday. But before that, Liverpool hopes to take three points from the match against Sunderland.
"We will play three matches in the Premier League before going to Japan and we want a stronger position in our championship," said the Spanish coach.
"We will play against Sunderland, then against Wigan, so maybe we could climb into the top four. The match against Sunderland is very important for us and we know we have to win it. It would be amazing to go to Japan after winning our last three matches in the championship."
"That is my goal. In this case, we could go to Japan thinking only about trophies, not about the Premier League."
"Then the league will look much more realistic, because since the beginning of the season, we have played fewer matches than our rivals."
Before going to Tokyo, Liverpool also has matches in the Champions League against Chelsea and in the Premier League against Middlesbrough.
