Approaching the 2006 World Cup, which will take place in Germany, security is being strengthened. The German Football Federation, together with the FIFA organizing committee, has decided to focus heavily on security in advance.
Larger cities have been granted licenses to install plasma televisions in mass gathering places. Although such permits were not previously required, this system has now been introduced to maintain public order.
The Chief of the German Police, Konrad Freiberg, stated that he wants to establish order in advance, especially among German and hundreds of Polish national team fans.
"Without a doubt, the greatest attention is paid to the security of stadiums and their accesses," said K. Freiberg. "This championship must proceed flawlessly. Police officers are specially trained on how to act in any given situation."
Germany already faced security issues during the Confederations Cup held in the summer, when a drunkard ran onto the field several times during the matches.
