In March, the battle for former captain Roy Keane was won by Glasgow - a veteran who ended his career at Manchester United in November accepted an offer from the leader of the Scottish championship and signed a one-and-a-half year contract with the new club.
The 34-year-old, who retired from Manchester United last month after spending 12 years at the club, had been courted by numerous clubs in recent weeks - including Everton, Bolton, and even Real Madrid, but finally chose Glasgow Celtic, a team he has been a fan of since childhood.
"I gave other clubs the opportunity and they all made an impression. However, this choice is the best for me. I feel like I belong here and I am now ready to work and strive for victories," Keane said in his official presentation. "I have been playing in the English Premier League for a long time and I started to feel like I have nothing left to prove there - I needed a new environment, new teams, and stadiums."
Keane, who has not played in official matches since breaking his leg in a game against Liverpool in September, joined Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson's management in 1993 and helped the team win the English championship seven times. However, this season, with the team performing poorly, the temperamental Irishman publicly criticized his teammates and soon after this conflict, departed from the club by mutual agreement.
It is true that the Irish defender will only be able to make his debut for Celtic in January when the winter transfer window opens. Additionally, he will have to spend New Year's Day watching the leaders' showdown in Edinburgh against Hearts, as per Scottish league rules, a player cannot play on the same day he is registered in his new club.
