Former Real Madrid head coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo stated on Wednesday that he would have won titles with the Royal club if the club's management had given him more time.
V. Luxemburgo, who was fired from the Real Madrid coaching position a couple of weeks ago after eleven months of work, returned to his former club Santos on Wednesday.
"They (Real - ed.) hired a well-known coach from Brazil, but it seems they knew nothing about him," said the Brazilian. "If they had known about me, they would have known that I could help them win trophies, whether it be the UEFA Champions League or the Spanish league title."
"I didn't fail. They didn't let me win," V. Luxemburgo stated.
The former coach of the Brazilian national team won the Brazilian championship with Santos in 2004 and was invited to Real Madrid. The Brazilian also managed Santos in the past, but in 1997 he moved to Corinthians.
Since December 2004, Santos has had three different coaches and another one temporarily in charge of the team, during the coaching change.
"It was a very useful experience and I am sure that I became a better coach," Luxemburgo continued. "Today, I can say that the main difference between Brazilian and European football is financial. In financial terms, European clubs are very strong, but in other aspects, we do not lag behind them."
V. Luxemburgo named the ticket to the 2007 Libertadores Cup as the main goal at the Santos helm, the South American equivalent of the UEFA Champions League.
