The striker of the Spanish champions Samuel Eto'o will not help his team so that he can participate in the African Nations Cup with the Cameroonian national team in January, one Cameroonian radio station reported on Friday.
The 24-year-old Cameroonian has been in impressive form this season, scoring 17 times in as many matches in the Spanish championship. He is also considered one of the real contenders to defend the title of the best African footballer and become a record holder with three awards.
"I never thought of not going to Egypt (where the African Nations Cup will take place)," the striker was quoted by one Cameroonian radio station. "We are national team players, the heart of every Cameroonian is in our blood. Our duty is to bring them joy. I take pride in defending my country's colors whenever I am called and wherever it is needed."
On Thursday, the Spanish newspaper "El Periodico" claimed that S. Eto'o has not yet decided whether to go to the African Nations Cup with the national team or help "Barcelona."
In this year's FIFA Player of the Year awards in Germany, S. Eto'o finished third, behind his teammate Ronaldinho and Frank Lampard of Chelsea.
The Cameroonian national team, which did not qualify for the World Cup in Germany next year, has recently received a lot of criticism, so the result of the African Nations Cup, which starts on January 20, will be very important.
