English sports minister seeks players' salary cap © EuroFootball.com

British Sports Minister Richard Caborn is seeking to convince UEFA to introduce a limit on players' salaries.

"There is no point when English football earns 1.4 billion pounds sterling from television broadcasts, and a large part of that money is spent on players' salaries," Caborn told the "Daily Express" newspaper.

"Restrictions on players' wages need to be introduced and agent control needs to be tightened," the minister added.

Caborn, who is also the chairman of the European Sports Ministers Council, stated that the Nice Treaty, signed in 2003 to expand the European Union, should be utilized.

"The Nice agreement allows for changes in laws and the implementation of salary baskets," Caborn outlined his plans. "We are preparing a project that will be signed by all parties, and UEFA ensures that it does not harm the game and that the decision is appropriate."

"We will report on the progress in June," Caborn concluded. "I think that by then we will reach an agreement."
