Former Moscow "Spartak" defender Yuri Kovtun, who was actively sought after by Vilnius, chose to play for the Vladikavkaz club, which will be the second strongest in the Russian league next season.
"We signed a one-year contract, with the option to extend it for another year," said J. Kovtun to the Russian sports newspaper "Sport-Express". "Even before the New Year, I negotiated with the club president Sergey Takoyev, and we were able to reach an agreement."
"It was very important for me to reach an agreement before the first team gathering," continued the experienced defender, who turned 36 on Thursday. "I am satisfied with the agreement and now I am flying to Vladikavkaz, where the first team gathering will be on Friday, and the pre-season camp will start on Saturday."
The highly experienced 190 cm tall defender, who has been a Russian champion three times, won the Russian Cup four times and represented the Russian national team, began negotiations with Vilnius "Vėtra" at the beginning of December.
