Vičenza city and the whole Paraguayan football community are shocked - due to a car accident a few days ago, "Vicenza" club player in the "Serie B" league and Paraguay national team forward Julio Gonzalez had to have his arm amputated.

On the morning of December 22, the 24-year-old J. Gonzalez was driving to Venice's Marco Polo airport with his teammate Gerardo Grighini when they got into a car accident, resulting in severe injuries for J. Gonzalez who was then taken to the hospital.

Although doctors performed several surgeries to try to save the player's left arm which had multiple deep wounds, on Tuesday evening it became clear that there was no hope and amputation was necessary - all of which meant the end of a professional football career for the player.

"We wanted victory to dedicate it to Julio. Without a doubt, before this match we were not thinking about football," - after the 0-1 home loss to "Pescara," "Vicenza" head coach Giancarlo Camolese said.

J. Gonzalez, who started his career playing for "Guarani Asuncion" and "Huracan," had been representing "Vicenza" for two years and this season he was the most productive player in the team with 9 goals in 15 matches. In 2004, the forward won a silver medal in the Olympic Games representing Paraguay national team and also participated in the Copa America tournament, where he scored a goal in the victory against the future champion Brazil.
