Norwegian national team defender John Arne Riise has extended his contract with the European champions until June 2009.

The previous contract of the Norwegian, who won the UEFA Champions League in a dramatic match against Milan last season, was set to expire in June of this year.

"It's a wonderful club that I know very well," said J.A. Riise about Liverpool. "I really like English football and hope to continue my career at Liverpool."

The 25-year-old J.A. Riise, who joined Liverpool in 2001 from Monaco, has represented the Norwegian national team 51 times.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez also expressed his joy at the contract extension: "I am very happy that John has extended his contract with us. He is a very dedicated player, a true professional. His attitude and work ethic are of the highest level. He trains a lot and works hard every day."

"He has always performed well in the Liverpool lineup, whether as a left-back or midfielder. I am happy that we can rely on him in the future," added Benitez.
