Uruguayan national team and Schalke defender Dario Rodriguez has extended his contract with the German club until the summer of 2008. The contract also includes the possibility of extending the agreement for another year.
The 31-year-old defender, who has represented the Uruguayan national team 43 times, is a key player in the lineup of the German club, having played in five UEFA Champions League matches for Schalke this year.
"Dario is one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga and has played very reliably this year," said Schalke sports director Andreas Muller. "He is also very popular and respected within the team."
Dario Rodriguez himself, who joined the Schalke team in 2002 from CA Penarol, stated that by extending his contract with the club, he aims to continue playing in the UEFA Champions League next year, from which the team withdrew after the first stage this year: "We have one big goal in the Bundesliga - to once again qualify for the UEFA Champions League."
