Cameroon's national team and forward Samuel Eto'o was elected African Player of the Year for the third consecutive time on Thursday, narrowly beating Ivory Coast's and Chelsea's forward Didier Drogba by two points.
S.Eto'o became only the second player to win this title three years in a row. Previously, only Ghana's national team star Abedi Pele managed to do so in the early 1990s.
The Barcelona star collected 108 points in the voting, while D.Drogba remained in second place with 106 points. This is the smallest difference between first and second places in the history of the thirty-year voting.
Ghana's national team and Chelsea's defender Michael Essien finished third in the voting, where all 52 national team head coaches belonging to the African football associations vote.
Last year, S.Eto'o helped Barcelona win the Spanish championship, and he finished third in the voting for the best player in the world last year.
