"Carling" cup easily won by "Man Utd" © EuroFootball.com

"Man Utd" team, far from having the most successful season, won their first and possibly only trophy this year - the "Carling" Cup. In the final held on Sunday at the "Millenium" Stadium, the Manchester club crushed another "Premier" league club "Wigan" 4-0. At the beginning of the match, both teams had a few good chances to score, but failed to capitalize on them. In the 14th minute, "Wigan" suffered a blow - their main goalkeeper Mike Politt got injured and was replaced by veteran John Filan. The match, as it turned out later, was not the best for this goalkeeper. In a beautiful and open final, the first goal came in the 33rd minute - taking advantage of the confusion among the "Wigan" defenders, Wayne Rooney confidently defeated the goalkeeper and ended his streak of 12 games without a goal. The first half, dominated by "Man Utd", ended with a minimal advantage for Sir Alex Ferguson's disciples. Although "Wigan" started the second half quite actively, three goals in six minutes shattered their last hopes. The second goal of the match, from a penalty, was scored by the Frenchman Louis Saha, who managed to displace Ruud van Nistelrooy from the starting eleven. The ball was sent into the net for the third time after four minutes - another mistake by the "Wigan" defenders was exploited by L. Saha who passed the ball accurately to Cristiano Ronaldo, who calmly and technically defeated the opponents' goalkeeper for the third time. The final blow to the "Wigan" goal was struck by W. Rooney again - in the 61st minute, he avoided the offside trap and scored his second goal of the match. Soon he had another chance to score, but the shot went wide of the goal.
