This week in the town of San Félix da Marinha, located near Porto, referees and their assistants selected for the European Championship will participate in a special UEFA seminar.
Among the main topics of the seminar are the possibilities of ensuring the uniform interpretation of the rules of the game and cooperation between referees and their assistants. Referees will also have to undergo physical fitness tests, supervised by the referee physical preparation expert Werner Helsen from Belgium.
According to UEFA Referees Committee Chairman Volker Roth, in this championship all three referees in the matches will be from the same country. He said that this step was prompted by the fact that referees from different, especially smaller countries, poorly understand each other.
Ambassador Referees
Four referees - Pierluigi Collina (Italy), Anders Frisk (Sweden), Markus Merk (Germany) and Lubos Michel (Slovakia) will also have special duties at this seminar. These referees, as UEFA ambassadors, participate in the joint UEFA and International Red Cross Committee (ICRC) campaign to protect children from the horrors of war. Information about this campaign has already been published on our portal. ">
