The striker of the Greek national team plans to leave Amsterdam this summer. The tall striker is currently the third choice of the Dutch club head coach Danny Blind in the starting lineup after the excellent form shown by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Swedish Markus Rosenberg.
Charisteas himself would like to return to Germany this summer. It was from the Bundesliga side Werder Bremen that the Greek moved to the Netherlands in January 2005 for five million euros. However, since then Charisteas has not been able to secure a permanent place in the starting lineup, and his playing time on the field has significantly decreased this winter when the most productive Eredivisie player K.J. Huntelaar moved from Heerenveen to Ajax.
Since then, the 26-year-old striker has appeared on the field only four times, all as a substitute. In total, this season Charisteas scored 7 goals in 13 matches.
The striker of the Greek national team is still a living legend in his country, becoming one after scoring the winning goal in the final of the 2004 European Championship against Portugal. Throughout that tournament, the striker scored three goals.
