After a 0-2 defeat suffered on Wednesday in Pamplona against "Osasuna", Gonzalo Arconada was relieved of his duties as head coach of San Sebastian, and instead the club's sports director Jose Mari Bakero was immediately appointed until the end of the season.
"The club's board of directors decided to dismiss Gonzalo Arconada," said Real Sociedad President Miguel Fuentesas at a press conference on Thursday. "The reason for this decision is simple - poor results of the club."
G. Arconada took over at the helm of the San Sebastian club at the end of January, when Jose Maria Amorrortu was dismissed due to poor results that left Real Sociedad in fifteenth place.
Since then, Real Sociedad has only collected six points in eight matches and is the team that has conceded the most goals in the Spanish championship.
Currently, the Basque club is in eighteenth place in the twenty-team tournament.
"We can no longer afford to make mistakes," M. Fuentesas said. "No one in the team can afford to make mistakes anymore, but we also can't be afraid, we must be brave and determined to win."
The dismissed coach himself said he understood the club's decision. "Both they and I understood that this is the best decision. I am disappointed that I couldn't debut well as a coach. I hope the club will do better and will remain in the top league," said the former coach.
Former Spanish national team player J.M. Bakero, who previously played for Real Sociedad and Barcelona, will make his debut at the helm of the club in Sunday's match against Madrid's Getafe.
J.M. Bakero has previously managed the "Puebla" team in Mexico, as well as worked as an assistant to Louis van Gaal and Llorenco Serra Ferrero at Barcelona.
