The hosts took the lead in the 22nd minute, when Brazilian Ronaldinho successfully converted a penalty earned by Marko van Bommel. "Real's" situation worsened a few minutes later when Roberto Carlos was sent off the field for a second yellow card. Although "Real" striker Ronaldo equalized before the end of the first half, it was all they could manage with only ten players.
