Defender will miss the rest of the season due to injury after breaking a bone in his foot during training sessions.
The 32-year-old Spaniard suffered the injury during a training session on Monday. He will undergo surgery in the near future, after which he will be unable to play for about 12 weeks.
The Spaniard missed Sunday's match against Manchester City, which Middlesbrough won 1-0, sitting on the bench.
G.Mendieta arrived at Middlesbrough in August 2003 on a one-year loan agreement and helped the English club win the Carling Cup that season. In July 2004, Middlesbrough bought out the Spaniard's contract from Roma Lazio and signed a four-year deal with G.Mendieta.
