The defender of the Dutch national youth team Robin van Persie will play for the English Premier League champion London next season. The latter club has reached an agreement with Rotterdam's Feyenoord for the player's transfer. The final amount of the deal will depend on the results of the medical examination.
The twenty-year-old attacking defender has been a regular in Feyenoord's starting lineup for the past two years, helping the team win the UEFA Cup in 2002. That same year, he was named the best young Dutch footballer of the year. This year, he has scored 6 goals in 27 games.
In an interview with the official Arsenal website, head coach Arsene Wenger said: "Robin is a great young talent and a fantastic acquisition for the club. He has already shown his great potential, playing for both the club and the national youth team, and he will significantly strengthen our squad. He plays wonderfully with his left foot and is a great passer with good field vision. Robin is a versatile player, capable of playing both in attack and on the defensive line."
Van Persie himself said: "I am extremely happy to have joined a club as great as Arsenal. It is a dream come true for me."
The London club, which clinched the champions' title last Sunday, will officially register van Persie on May 17, when clubs are allowed to sign contracts with new players again.
