The head coach, Frenchman Gerard Houllier, claims that "Lyon" has practically secured their fifth consecutive French champion title.
"Looking objectively, there are only 15 points left until the end of the championship, so we have already won," said Houllier on Sunday.
"Lyon" defeated "Nice" 2-1 on Saturday and now has a fourteen point advantage over second-placed "Bordeaux" with five rounds left until the end of the championship.
"Lyon" is only two points away from surpassing the record of four consecutive titles held by "St. Etienne" and "Marseille."
"Lyon" has been leading the French championship since August of last year, when they defeated "Auxerre" 2-0. Houllier's team could be crowned champions even before their next duel in Paris against "PSG" on Saturday. All "Bordeaux" needs to do is win, after drawing against "St. Etienne" without scoring goals this weekend.
"I believe we are already champions psychologically," said Houllier. "This victory against 'Nice' is very important for us, especially after what happened in Milan."
Houllier was referring to the 3-1 loss against "AC Milan" on Tuesday, which led to their elimination from the UEFA Champions League.
"Lyon" president Jean-Michel Aulas warned everyone after the victory against "Nice": "It is true that we took a huge step towards the champion title, but in Milan we were one foot in the semi-final at the 88th minute, and after two minutes we were out of the tournament."
