"Lietuviškojo" Edinburgh club and Scotland national team goalkeeper Craig Gordon was named the best player of this season's Scottish Premiership by the Scottish Football Writers' Association. Gordon beat out Glasgow Celtic striker Shaun Maloney and his teammate Paul Hartley in these elections and became the first Hearts football player in 20 years to win such an award. It was previously achieved by Sandy Jardine two decades ago. Throughout this season, Gordon demonstrated excellent form, helping his team reach the Scottish Cup final and secure second place in the championship. After such a performance, several famous clubs showed interest in the player, but the Scot remained loyal to his team and extended his contract until 2009. "Goalkeepers very rarely receive such award. Just like Hearts football players, so summing it all up I am very happy and grateful to my team for this recognition," Gordon expressed his joy. The best young player, as expected, was recognized as Kilmarnock striker Steven Naismith."
