The career of the "Newcastle" club captain and former England national team striker Alan Shearer has come to an end - the 35-year-old player, who had planned to retire from football after the season, had to do so earlier due to a knee injury.
On April 17, in the match against "Sunderland" which they won 4-1, A. Shearer scored a goal from the penalty spot, but after playing for just over an hour, he suffered a knee ligament injury. Following more detailed examinations on Friday, it was revealed that he will have to miss the remaining three English "Premiership" matches due to the injury.
"Now it's all over for me. I won't be able to play in the last three matches and it's disappointing. But I'm not complaining, how could I? I have great memories, but I regret nothing - my career was amazing," the player told the newspaper "The Sun".
According to the legendary striker, he realized immediately after the injury that his career was coming to an end: "Torn medial ligament, and even though I don't need surgery, I will still have to wear a knee brace for a few weeks. When I got injured at the 'Stadium of Light', deep down I knew it was the end, and the fans also understood that. However, some say that ending a career with a goal in a victorious match against 'Sunderland' is fantastic, and I think they are right."
During his career at the "Newcastle" club, Alan Shearer scored 206 goals, made 30 appearances for the England national team, and scored 260 goals in the country's championship in 441 matches, topping the list of all-time top league scorers. The only significant trophy won by A. Shearer in his 18-year career is the English championship title with "Blackburn" in 1995.
Another problem for the "Newcastle" club is that another club striker Michael Owen is still injured, and although he was included in the team for Saturday's match against "West Brom", he is most likely to only appear in the last matches of this season. He suffered the injury on New Year's Eve during the match against "Tottenham". In this season, M. Owen has only played 10 matches for "Newcastle".
