Coaches and fans of the England national football team received very bad news - one of the team's leaders, striker Wayne Rooney, may be forced to miss the upcoming World Cup due to an injury.
The twenty-year-old footballer got injured in Saturday's Premier League match against London, when he seemingly innocently collided with opponent defender Paulo Ferreira. Despite this, detailed examinations revealed that Rooney had broken one of the bones in his right foot. Because of this injury, he will not be able to play for about six weeks - exactly the time remaining until England's first match in the World Cup.
Interestingly, a similar situation occurred in the 2002 World Cup with defender David Beckham. The thirty-year-old footballer suffered the same injury eight weeks before the tournament, and although he managed to recover and represent the team, he did not show his best athletic form and later admitted that he was not fully ready to play.
Finally, this is not the only grim news. Coach Glenn Roeder stated that another England team striker, Michael Owen, who returned to the field on Saturday after a serious injury, was not fully satisfied with the condition of his foot. However, according to the coach, no conclusions can be drawn from this yet.
England will play their first match in the World Cup on June 10 against Paraguay.
